Gengetone Music; A New Era Of Social Consciousness And Recognition.

By Brenda Ochwald. Gengetone music has come a long way since its debut on mainstream in 2018. The genre, which was once known for its vulgar lyrics about sex, drugs, and thug life, has taken a turn for the better. With artists like Mbuzi Gang, Sylvia Ssaru, Swat Matire, Exray, Ndovu Kuu, and Shekinah Karen, gengetone music has begun to address social issues affecting society in Kenya. The artists have shifted their focus from promoting immoral behavior to addressing issues such as unemployment, poverty, and corruption. This change has been welcomed by many Kenyans who were growing tired of the genre’s negative influence on the youth. From Ex to Dai Dai and now Bad Girl, Swat Matire, Shekinah Karen and Fathermoh are music figures you ought to look out for. The trio are presently trending with this funfilled track that has since captivated the eyes and ears of the mass. Bad Girl tells a story of a girl (Shekinah Karen) who’s caught cheating on two boys (Swat Matire and Fathermoh). The latter bursts and interrupts Swat and Shekinah’s wedding leaving their guests awed with the revelation of Shekinah’s infidelity. This displays the act of adultery and cheating in the modern day relationships. Gengetone music producers and musicians have also been recognized for their hard work, for instance, the genre was listed in the new Grammy’s category, which is a great achievement for the industry and maybe for the named artists too. In conclusion, the genre’s shift from promoting immoral behavior to addressing relatable issues has been welcomed by many Kenyans and is a sign of the industry’s growth.
