Boondocks Gang– ‘Ghetto Genius’ EP Review: A Promising Step To An Exciting New Era

Celebrating their strengths while keeping the element of surprise, the Ghetto Genius EP is better than Boondocks Gang’s other recent releases.

One thing you cannot fault in the Boondocks Gang is experimentation, because they are good at it.

Since their debut, the three have consistently been on their toes, releasing great music that has been warmly accepted by the youths, whether individually or as a group.

Their recent studio project Ghetto Genius is a plus to their music career.

Ghetto Genius, which is already available on YouTube and digital platforms, consists of 6 tracks which include;   ‘Mapeng’, ‘Bure Kabisa’, ‘Izi ni Gani’, ‘Naskia Wah’ and ‘Ngakunywa Yote’.

So far so good, one track, ‘Naskia Wah’  featuring Ethic Entertainment, has an official video with over 1 million views on YouTube, while the other, ‘Mapeng’, has its official video that is to be released very soon.

The rest of the tracks have the audios that are already uploaded on all digital platforms.

‘Naskia Wah’ is energetic, courtesy of Exray’s and Odi Wa Muranga’s deep voices, who lyrically vibe to lit party moments.

Reckles comes in singing about being shameless, while Zilla sings about being real in this tough world.

Basically the songs on the EP are just generally about the two groups defending their gengetone crowns.

Maddox extends his clear, crisp voice to deliver satisfying high notes as the group vibes while playing pool, with laid-back confident vixens jamming to the beats. 

Enough about ‘Naskia Wah’; there’s another hit on the way, a single featured in this EP titled ‘Mapeng’.

Cool, confident and conniving is the colour we love to see on Boondocks Gang, and Mapeng is definitely bringing up those vibes.

Their voices are mighty, raspy yet clear, especially from Odi wa Muranga. The single is set to premiere soon and we can’t wait.

The four remaining tracks have heavy verses and choruses, balanced out with relatively softer, dreamier pre-choruses.

The songs prove overpowering, at times clashing with the group’s rapping and vocals.

The ‘Bure Kabisa’ sound does show another side of the Gang, but it also kills the momentum of an otherwise strong offering, as if bringing this party to an abrupt close.

Three years into their career, it’s clear that Boondocks Gang have been reckoning with how they can evolve with the times and still preserve the best aspects of their artistry.
