Former American President Barack Obama has joined the world today in mourning the demise of legendary American Rock n Roll star Tina Turner,   who passed away on Tuesday, aged 83.

Born Anna Mae Bullock,  on November 26, 1939, Tina Turner, who was an American-born and naturalized Swiss singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, and author, died at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long illness.

Widely referred to as the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n Roll’, she rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue before launching a successful career as a solo performer in the 1980s.

In his eulogy, president Obama said thus about the legend; “Tina Turner was raw. She was powerful. She was unstoppable. And she was unapologetically herself-speaking and singing her truth through joy and pain; triumph and tragedy. Today we join fans around the world in honoring the Queen of Rock and Roll, and a star whose light will never fade.”

Sometimes nicknamed the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” Turner, known for her massive hit ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’, won six of her eight Grammy Awards in the 1980s.

In that decade she landed a dozen songs in the Top 40, including “Typical Male,” “The Best,” “Private Dancer” and “Better Be Good to Me.” Her 1988 show in Rio de Janeiro drew 180,000 people, which remains one of the largest concert audiences for any single performer.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.
